Growing up in a northern Canadian city, adventurous and outdoor lifestyles are very common. Many try to escape the city on weekends to partake in outdoor activities like going to a recreational property (lake house, cottage, cabin) camping, hunting, operating off-road vehicles, etc. I was raised in this way and generally avoided the city. At the age of 22, I began to travel internationally for business and found myself in many new cities around Canada, the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. When I had some extra time in these cities, I would always search for the ‘top things’ to do in each city. In Abu Dhabi, I visited the grand mosque; in Bangkok, I went to the Grand Palace; in Sydney, I strolled the Royal Botanic Garden, in Houston, I went to NASA’s Johnson Space Center; and, in Pittsburgh, I saw the Andy Warhol Museum. One day it occurred to me that I should search the top things in the city where I lived. When the ‘top ten’ list appeared, I was embarrassed to realize that I had only done two of the ten items. Why is it that when we visit new cities, we want to see all it has to offer, but many of us don’t take the time to see what our city has to offer? In the following months, I made it a priority to see the top ten things my city had to offer, and I began to enjoy my city a lot more. Instead of planning my next getaway out of the city, I began to plan things to do in the city. There are countless things to do in the city, including, events, parks, galleries, museums, walking/running paths, and markets, and there’s always a new restaurant or café to try out. The best thing is that there are many inexpensive things to do in the city. By changing my perspective of my city, I was able to find cost-effective enjoyment close to home. My wife and I have even planned a few ‘staycations’ over the years where we book a new hotel in a central location of our city and treat our time as if we were in a new city – exploring, attending an event, etc. I suggest that everyone who lives in a city get out and enjoy what their city has to offer before travelling to other cities or destinations – you might be surprised.
